The eight films nominated for this year's Starlight Cinema Award illuminate a radiant universe where children and youth make sense of the world and grow in their own way. Even when faced with loss and grief, fractured relationships, and the unraveling of family, these young protagonists find their footing and move forward, guided by a starlight that is entirely their own.

These films turn their gaze toward the fragile yet wondrous inner lives of children who move through the long shadows of death and illness, or confront emotions they have never felt before. In 1970s Yugoslavia, an imaginative girl joins a choir in the hope of saving her ailing grandmother. An Iranian girl refuses to let her world collapse after the tragic death of her idol, quietly setting out to rebuild it. Elsewhere, a boy struggles to protect the sanctuary he shares with his grandmother, the very person who has always embraced him as he is from the prejudices of the world. Each of these stories carries the resilience of young lives who choose, against all odds, to keep going. Alongside them, a boy adrift in the political instability of 1996 Taiwan slip into reckless choices; a fifteen-year-old girl is thrown into confusion by an unexpected attraction to her brother's new girlfriend; and a Danish girl grapples with whether to leave behind her hideaway as a treasured friendship begins to shift. Together, these works tenderly trace the growing pains of adolescence. 

Meanwhile, other films venture beyond conventional notions of normalcy in search of new forms of solidarity and meaning. One explores an alternative family taking shape in the face of a parent’s divorce; another follows a boy who sets out alone into an unfamiliar world, determined to exchange the two right-footed shoes he bought by accident. These stories reveal the resilience of children as they chart their own paths to happiness amid adult indifference. Rather than softening reality with comforting illusions, all eight films confront it with honesty, offering a moving portrait of children finding their place in the world.
